Rules for Smoke Detectors
There are some general rules to be aware of so your smoke detectors are most effective.
- Never paint over smoke detectors.
- Do not place them in areas that can get wet such as in bathrooms or outdoor areas.
- Do not install detectors near doors, windows, or vents. The airflow could disrupt their sensors.
- Smoke rises, so it’s best to place the smoke alarm on the ceiling. If installing on the wall, keep the device between 4 and 12 inches from the ceiling.
Install Smoke Detectors In Bedrooms
Most bedrooms are away from shared living spaces and are also where family members spend the majority of their time. Install a smoke detector inside of each bedroom and just outside of the bedroom doors.
In Stairwells
Smoke rises, so it is best to place a detector at the bottom of a staircase for an early alert. For extra protection, also install one at the top of the stairs.
Every Level of The Home
There should be at least one smoke detector on each floor in a home, even if there is no sleeping area there.
Where to Install a Smoke Detector in The Kitchen
Having a smoke detector in the kitchen is a necessity because fires often start there. The best place to put a smoke detecting device in the kitchen is at least ten feet away from cooking surfaces to prevent false alarms.
Don’t Forget Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Carbon monoxide detectors are also important alarms for the home and shouldn’t be overlooked. Place a carbon monoxide detector on each floor of the home. Unlike smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors can be installed closer to the floor. Place carbon monoxide detectors near sleeping areas and at least ten feet from an attached garage.
Properly installed smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are essential for protecting your family and property.
